Depending on where you live, it might not actually feel like fall yet. But the reality is that we’re coming up on the biggest earning period of the year as bloggers—the fourth quarter.
And it’s about this time every year that I like to go through my site and take stock. Typically I find that there’s certain areas—sidebars, footers, about pages—that get forgotten over time and need some love. So before the busiest season really kicks into gear, spend an hour to go through this post and update your site for maximum growth and earning potential during this busy season!
I’ll be the first to admit that I rarely update my pages. For the most part, blogs are about the posts, so it’s totally understandable. But, you still want to have a polished about page that explains who you are and what your blog is all about, as well as a contact page that has updated contact information. If your contact page has a form, fill it out to test it and make sure it’s working properly! You would hate to be missing out on great connections simply because a form was working incorrectly!
You likely have links in your menu and sidebar—now’s the time to make sure they’re linking to the right place. Double check our social media icons as well!
Update Your Media Kit
Brands have bigger budgets during the holidays, which means it’s an opportune time to pick up a few extra projects. Focusing on creating amazing content during this season can secure some great partnerships for this season and future seasons too. So, make sure your media kit is up to date with your social followings and traffic numbers from Google Analytics.
Link to Old Content
Jess talked about this a few weeks ago, but linking to old content within your new content is huge! It keeps people on your site and introduces them to stories they may not have found before. IF you haven’t started doing this yet, start now! It’s a great practice to put into motion year round.

Does Your Site Match Your Goals
First off, what is the goal of your site?! Whatever it is, make sure that your site is designed to make those goals easier to achieve.
Maybe it’s telling stories through beautiful imagery. Make sure you have an image-focused site that loads your gorgeous photos quickly.
Maybe your goal is to get people to buy product via your affiliate links. Make sure you have shop the post widgets that are easy to find and use, as well as a shop boutique that you regularly update (both of these can be set with RewardStyle or ShopStyle). Use links organically throughout your content as well.
Or, maybe your goal is to teach people how to cook. Make sure you show people the actual how of cooking, not just the final product!
Make Your Content Easy to Find
A fabulous post is worth nothing if people can’t find it! Add a search bar to your sidebar if you don’t have one yet. To make individual posts easier to find, tag them with appropriate keyword search terms and update or reorganize your categories where necessary—Wordpress makes that super easy!
Update your Sidebar and Footer
The areas can easily get neglected. Go through them both and get rid of the junk. I know it’s tempting to put a ton of stuff in there, but the reality is that busy sidebars and footers are distracting and keep people from focusing on your content. So, simplify!
Update WordPress & Plugins
This one is next to last, but one of the most important things you can do. Always, always, ALWAYS keep your version of WordPress up to date! Not updating leaves your site open to hackers and can cause major issues with plugin compatibility. Also, make sure all of your plugins are updated! Again, same kind of thing as WordPress updates! Not updating your plugins can cause major issues on your site!
Transfer to WordPress
If you still haven’t made the move to WordPress, moving to a new platform and debuting a brand new design is one major way to kick off the last quarter of this year. If you’re ready to make the move, we have a great step-by-step tutorial here!
